California Governor Race Withdraw Request Letter

Dear Eden Area Indivisible Members:

As you may know, the California Primary election to choose the two candidates for Governor for this November’s election is coming up on June 2nd. What you may not know is that there is a very crowded field of strong Democratic candidates and only two strong Republican candidates.

The big concern for the Democratic/progressive side is that in California, candidates from all parties can run in the primary, but only the top 2 will advance to the November election. This so-called “Jungle Primary” and the large Democratic field could very easily lead to the two Republican candidates getting the top two spots.

It would greatly help if candidates who have no chance of winning the top spots would instead drop out and put their support behind the stronger candidates. We are asking our members to write or email the low polling candidates a letter asking them to officially and completely withdraw from this race.

Below is an email template you can copy, paste, and sign in an email to each of the three lowest polling Democrats in the race. As of writing this, that would include Matt Mahan, Betty Yee, and Victor Villaraigosa. Find their campaign emails and the template below. They may be able to ignore one or two of these emails, but they can’t ignore hundreds. Takes just a few minutes to do.

Here’s the letter:

Subject: Request to Withdraw

I am a voting California resident, writing to you today on a matter I consider to be of utmost importance.

As you and I know, California has a nonpartisan primary, a “jungle primary.” This means all parties share the nominee ballot. This offers all nominees, regardless of party, an equal chance in the primary.

Unfortunately, this means low-polling candidates must reckon with their forecasted primary loss early on. Normally, this is not an issue. However, we currently have two republicans polling for the top spots.

All polls indicate we could see a California ballot with only two options for California Governor: Republicans. I think you and I would agree we simply can’t let that happen.

I am asking you on behalf of California, the democratic party, and all of those who would be put in serious danger with a republican governor, please withdraw from the race. Dropping out allows us to focus on fewer candidates, reduce the noise, and avoid a republican California.

We understand this is a tough decision, just as deciding to run for governor was for you. We hope the same thing that drew you to enter the race, the love of California and the desire to do right by her and her residents, will draw you toward doing the right thing now.

Thank you for your time and your efforts, and here’s hoping we can see you on a ballot in the future.
